There are 2 reasons why the iStorage products would not accept the PIN code:

1. The PIN is incorrect and it is not being accepted by the USB Flash and/or Hard drive;
2. The PIN is being entered too quickly.

The later one is a common problem. As the user grown more comfortable with our products, they enter the PIN at a fast pace. iStorage suggest entering the PIN slower to allow the products to register each key press.

An exploit that allows attackers to turn a normal USB device into a malicious one.
BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August of 2014.
It appears to demonstrate that as long as there is computer access to a USB device such as a USB flash drive, a malicious code can be programmed to exploit the USB controller of the USB device via firmware programming tools and so various malicious functions can be applied to the compromised USB device.

There are no ‘Back Doors’ to our products, we cannot retrieve a forgotten PIN or retrieve any data off the drives unless the PIN is known.

Below are answers for the most frequently asked questions:

The datAshur flash drive is pre-programmed with a default PIN which will unlock the device for the first time, allowing the user to create their own unique User and Admin PINs.

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press KEY Button
  • Enter default PIN 11223344
  • Press KEY Button
  • A blinking GREEN LED light will indicate the device is unlocked
The User PIN (Personal Identification Number) can be changed to almost any number that is desired.

  • The New User PIN must be 7 to 15 digits long.
  • The New User PIN cannot contain only repetitive numbers (3-3-3-3-3-3-3)
  • The New User PIN cannot contain only consecutive numbers (1-2-3-4-5-6-7),(7-6-5-4-3-2-1)

You can create a word, name, phrase or any other alphanumerical PIN combination by simply pressing the key with the corresponding letters on it.

Examples of these types of PINs are:

For Password you would press the following keys:
7(pqrs) 2(abc) 7(pqrs) 7(pqrs) 9(wxyz) 6(mno) 7(pqrs) 3(def)

For iStorage you would press:
4(ghi) 7(pqrs) 8(tuv) 6(mno) 7(pqrs) 2(abc) 4(ghi) 3(def)

Using this method, long and easy to remember PINs can be created.

Your datAshur has a built-in rechargeable battery.

Even if the battery is fully discharged you can still continue to use the drive by following the instructions below:

  • Connect the datAshur to a USB port on any computer
  • While connected to the computer, enter the User or Admin PIN to unlock the drive
  • While connected to the USB port, the internal battery will automatically charge – this is shown by a flashing BLUE LED.

We recommend you keep the datAshur drive connected for approximately 1 hour to fully charge the battery.

Unlock the datAshur with the default User PIN (refer to, ‘How do I use the datAshur for the first time?’) and then whilst the GREEN LED is blinking proceed with the following steps:

  • Press and hold the Key Button for 3 seconds
  • Enter a New User PIN number (The PIN must be 7 – 15 digits long)
  • Press the Key Button to store the New User PIN
  • Re-enter the New User PIN number
  • Press the Key Button to confirm the New User PIN

What if I forget my PIN?

If you forget the User and Admin PINs, there is absolutely no way of gaining access to the data stored on the drive, there are no back doors to the drive.

You will need to completely reset the datAshur by following the directions in the User Manual. By resetting the drive, all data stored on the datAshur will be deleted.

When the datAshur is reset the following occurs:

  • The User and Admin encryption keys are deleted
  • All the data on the datAshur is deleted
  • A new User PIN will need to be set
  • The datAshur will need to be formatted
The Admin PIN is useful in a corporate environment where an Administrator can provide access to the datAshur if the User PIN is forgotten or unavailable.

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press the Key Button
  • Enter your User PIN (unlock the datAshur in User mode) and press the Key Button
  • Rapidly press the Key Button twice and hold the Key Button down on the second press for 3 seconds
  • Enter a new Admin PIN and press the Key Button – the GREEN LED will double blink indicating the datAshur is in Admin mode

Note: If the LEDS in the above step are “single blinking” then the first key press did not register or was not fast enough. If you continue, you will be changing
the User PIN.

10 consecutive incorrect PIN entries will activate the brute force mechanism and will completely reset the drive as follows:

  • All encryption keys are deleted
  • The User and Admin PINs are deleted
  • All the data on the datAshur is deleted
  • A new User and/or Admin PIN will need to be set
  • The datAshur drive will need to be formatted
In case the User PIN is forgotten, or if you would like to delete all data stored on the drive and configure a New User PIN, the RESET process will clear the User and Admin PIN, the encryption keys and will destroy all data. This means a New User PIN will have to be defined in order to re-enable the datAshur.

Also, since this forces the creation of a new encryption key, the datAshur will have to be reformatted.

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press and hold the Key Button and the number 2 Button for 3 seconds
  • Press 9 9 9 and press the Key Button
  • Press the Key Button again

 

Note: After resetting the datAshur a solid RED LED appears indicating a New User or Admin PIN has to be set.

Once the datAshur has been reset either with the method from the previous step or from a brute force attack (10 unsuccessful attempts to unlock) a New User PIN will need to be defined. This state is evident by a solid RED LED.

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press and hold the Key Button for 3 seconds
  • Enter your New User PIN
  • Press the Key Button to save
  • Re-enter your New User PIN number & press the Key Button again
  • If the New User PIN was accepted, the GREEN LED will single blink.

The datAshur will be unlocked and be ready to format.

The datAshur is shipped formatted to FAT32 file system by default. This will allow you to use the datAshur across all platforms (Windows, Apple, Linux)
with a file size limitation of up to 4GB.
For an ordinary user we recommend to have just one PIN, whereas in a corporate environment we strongly suggest creating an Admin PIN and User PIN.
When in admin mode you will be able to change the User PIN.
Please follow this procedure:

  • Press the Key Button 2 times as in ‘double-clicking’ a mouse.
  • Within 10 seconds enter the Admin PIN
  • Connect the datAshur to a USB port within 30 seconds
BadUSB is a theoretical exploit that was presented by SR Labs at the Black Hat conference in August of 2014. SR Labs demonstrated a vulnerability in one USB device that allowed malicious code to be programmed into the USB controller through a firmware update process.
The attack described is very sophisticated and in the case of iStorage products would require advanced knowledge of our USB controller, a leaked version of our firmware, the programming tool to update our controller, the password used for our programming tool, and an in depth understanding of the device’s functionality, etc.
According to SR Labs, the failsafe method to eliminate this threat is to simply disable the ability to update the controller’s firmware. Many of iStorage devices shipping today, including all of our USB 3.0 security products already have the firmware locked which prevents field updates to the USB controller.
As a continuous improvement, iStorage is locking down the firmware on all USB controllers used in iStorage devices to safeguard against this vulnerability. We recommend checking our website periodically for notices regarding BadUSB and Security Updates.
The datAshur drive is designed to work in a varied temperature environment:

• Operating Min/Max temperature 0 – 40C
• Storage Min/Max temperature -20 – 60C
• Operating Humidity max 90%
• Storage Humidity max 95%

The datAshur drives are primarily designed for everyday use as a portable storage drive to move files from one computer to another.

The question of the full write and erase of data and their durability is a very difficult to answer. The NAND flash components have a lifespan that is limited to around 10,000 or 100,000 program/erase cycles depending on the memory technology used.

Below is some information on the kind of technologies used in flash drives:

All iStorage datAshur’s drives are compatible and will run all Linux Operating Systems. This would need a third party software to unpack the operating system on the drive. A Linux operating system and be installed on a datAshur 4GB drive and above and, providing the right unpack tool is used, can hold multiple Linux operating systems on one drive (depending on capacity)
The IP Code (International Protection Marking) IEC standard 60529 classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion.

Types of intrusion can be:
Body parts (hands and fingers)
Dust
Accidental contact
Water by mechanical casings & electrical enclosures

There are three types of codes. Solid-particle protection, liquid ingress protection and mechanical impact protection (this has now been superseded by an IK rating)

That datAshur drive has a IP rating of 57. This means that the number “5” represents the term “Dust Protected” (Meaning; Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment)
The number “7” represents the level of protection the datAshur provides against the harmful ingress of water. The datAshur is IPx8 rated (The datAshur is suitable for a continuous immersion in water up to 1M under defined conditions of pressure and time)

The Admin PIN is useful in a corporate environment where an Administrator can provide access to the datAshur Pro if the User PIN is forgotten or unavailable.

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press the Key Button
  • Enter your User PIN (unlock the datAshur in User mode) and press the Key Button
  • Press and hold down the number 1 button and press the KEY button twice (double click)
  • Within 10 seconds begin to enter your new Admin PIN
  • Press KEY button twice (double click)
  • Within 10 seconds begin to re-enter your new Admin PIN
  • Press KEY button twice (double click)

If both Admin and User PINs have been created and a User enters an incorrect User PIN 10 (ten) consecutive times, the
datAshur Pro’s brute force mechanism will trigger and the User PIN will be deleted. All data will remain on the datAshur Pro
and can only be accessed by the Admin entering the correct Admin PIN.

If Admin enters an incorrect Admin PIN 10 (ten) consecutive times, then both the User and Admin PINs, the encryption key
and all data will be deleted and lost forever. The datAshur Pro will then revert back to factory default settings and will need to
be formatted before it can be reused.

In the event both the Admin and User PINs have been forgotten, or the user wants to delete all data stored on the datAshur
Pro, please follow the instructions below.

The reset process will clear all cryptographic parameters including both User and Admin PINs. This means the datAshur Pro
will revert back to the default User PIN set as11223344 – see section 4 on page 6 on how to change the User PIN. Also, since
this will force the creation of a new encryption key, the datAshur Pro will have to be reformatted

Please follow this procedure:

  • Press and hold down the number 7 button and then press the Key button once and release buttons
  • Press 9 9 9
  • Press and hold down the number 7 button and then press the Key button once and release buttons
  • Note: After resetting the datAshur the RED LED fades out to complete the reset process.

    In the event that Admin wants to delete all data stored on the datAshur Pro, please follow the instructions below. Only Admin
    settings will remain on the datAshur Pro but all data will be deleted and cannot be retrieved and the datAshur Pro will have to
    be reformatted

    Caution: Entering the Admin PIN to access a locked drive will clear the User PIN. For security reasons, we highly recommend that a new User PIN be created immediately once the drive has been unlocked
    using the Admin PIN.

    Please follow this procedure:

    • Unlock the datAshur Pro with Admin PIN
    • Press the KEY button 3 times (treble-click)
    • Within 10 seconds begin to press the number 3 (Def)
      button followed by the number 2 (Abc) button (32)
    • Press KEY button once
    • Within 10 seconds begin to enter your Admin PIN again
    • Press KEY button once

    For an ordinary user we recommend to have just one PIN, whereas in a corporate environment we strongly suggest creating an Admin PIN and User PIN.

    • Recovering data from a drive and configuring a new User PIN in the event an
      employee has forgotten their PIN
    • Retrieving data from a drive if an employee leaves the company
    • Setting policies such as ‘Read-Only’
    • The Admin PIN can be used to override all User settings

    Please follow this procedure:

    • Press and hold down the number 1 button and press the KEY button once
    • Within 10 seconds begin to enter your Admin PIN
    • Press the KEY button once

    The datAshur Pro comes in 4 capacities, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB. While Windows has no problems formatting the 8, 16 & 32GB drives in the FAT32 file format system. The same is not true for drive that go over the 32GB threshold. Windows will only format the datAshur Pro 64GB in the NTFS or exFAT file format systems.

    In order to use the FAT32 file format you will have to use third party software.

    Before the drive can be used, the Admin PIN MUST be set. This Admin PIN can be used to access the drive or set any Admin mode features of the drive.

    Creating the Admin PIN:

    • Awaken the drive by pressing the UNLOCK Button. The BLUE and GREEN LEDs will be a solid.
    • Press UNLOCK and the number 9 button at the same time. The LEDs will change to a solid BLUE and blinking GREEN.
    • Enter the PIN that you will use for the Admin PIN ensuring that your PIN meets the requirements as per “What is an Admin or User PIN” below, then press the UNLOCK Button. If accepted the GREEN LED will blink, (continute to step 4).
      The RED LED will blink if it does not meet the requirements as per “What is an Admin or User PIN” below and return to a solid BLUE and blinking GREEN (restart from step 2).
    • Re-enter the new Admin PIN and if accepted the GREEN LED should blink for 1 second. The drive will then return to a solid BLUE.
    • The drive is now in Admin mode and any Admin features can be set (e.g. adding a new User PIN etc.)
    • To exit Admin mode, press the LOCK Button. The drive will return to standby mode.
    • If no action is taken for 30 seconds, the drive will lock into a sleep mode.
    Please follow this procedure:

    • Press and hold UNLOCK and number 0 button at the same time for five seconds until the RED LED blinks.
      (This indicates that you can enter the Admin PIN)
    • Enter the Admin PIN and press the UNLOCK button.
    • Admin Mode is indicated by a solid BLUE LED.
    • To exit Admin Mode, either allow 30 seconds of inactivity or press the LOCK button.
    There is no other way to retrieve the Admin PIN. You will have to do a complete reset of the datAshur SSD. After a complete reset, all data will be lost and you will need to create a new Admin PIN (procedure above) and format the datAshur SSD manually.
    The datAshur SSD allows enrollment of 1 unique Admin and 1 User ID. If a user forgets their PIN, the datAshur SSD can be unlocked using the Admin PIN.
    For an ordinary users we recommend to have just one PIN code i.e. Admin PIN, whereas in a corporate environment we strongly suggest creating an Admin PIN and a User PIN. When in admin mode you will be able to add or change the User PIN code.

    • Enter the Admin Mode (press and hold the UNLOCK and the number 0 button at the same time for five seconds) – the RED LED will blink
    • Enter the Admin PIN and press UNLOCK Button – the BLUE LED will turn solid
    • Press UNLOCK and the number 1 button at the same time. The LEDs will turn to solid BLUE and blinking GREEN
    • Enter a new User PIN and press UNLOCK Button ensuring that your PIN meets the requirements as per “What is an Admin or User PIN” below.
      The GREEN LED blinks three times, the LEDs then return to a solid BLUE and blinking GREEN
    • Re-enter the User PIN and press UNLOCK Button. If the GREEN LED stays solid for three seconds followed by solid BLUE, the User PIN was accepted.

    The drive has now returned to Admin mode.

    The RED LED will blink three times if the entry does not match. The drive will return to a solid BLUE and blinking GREEN (restart from step 4).

    Use your Admin PIN to enter Admin Mode, and then create another User PIN in Admin Mode.
    The PIN (Personal Identification Number) can be changed to almost any number that is desired.

    To create your New User PIN follow the instructions below:

    • The New User PIN must be 7 to 16 digits in length
    • The New User PIN cannot contain all of the same numbers (3-3-3-3-3-3-3)
    • The New User PIN cannot contain all consecutive numbers (1-2-3-4-5-6-7), (7-6-5-4-3-2-1)

    The datAshur SSD® has an internal rechargeable battery with a smartcharging circuit. For safety, each datAshur SSD ships with a partial charge.

    Although the drive can be used out of the box, we recommend inserting the datAshur SSD into a powered USB port for 80 minutes to fully charge the battery.

    The battery will automatically charge whenever it is inserted into a powered USB port, regardless of its operational mode. In standby mode, the RED LED blinks to indicate charging and turns solid RED to indicate that it’s fully charged.

    Even if the battery is fully discharged you can still continue to use the drive by following the instructions below:

    • Connect the datAshur SSD drive to a USB port on any computer
    • While connected to the computer, enter the User or Admin PIN to unlock the drive
    • While connected to the USB port, the internal battery will automatically charge – this is shown by a blinking RED LED
    As a full disk encryption product, the datAshur SSD can never be used without a PIN.
    In case the Admin PIN is forgotten, or if you would like to delete all data stored on the drive and configure a New Admin PIN, the RESET process will clear the Admin and User PIN, the encryption key and all data will be destroyed.

    To perform a complete reset of the drive do the following:

    • Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK together with the number 2 button at the same time for 10 seconds. The RED and BLUE LEDs blink alternately followed by the GREEN LED turning solid for three seconds
    • The drive then returns into blinking BLUE and RED
    • When released the BLUE and GREEN LEDs will be solid.
    • A new Admin PIN will need to be created and the drive will need to be formatted.

    You have successfully reset the datAshur SSD.

    When the datAshur SSD drive is reset the following occurs:

    • A new encryption key is generated
    • The User and Admin PINs are deleted
    • All the data on the datAshur SSD drive is deleted
    • A new Admin PIN will need to be created
    • The datAshur SSD drive will need to be formatted
    You need to initialize, allocate the drive letter and format the datAshur SSD manually. For Mac, Linux, Android please refer to your OS formatting requirements or datAshur SSD user manual.
    Ensure that you have administrator privileges. You will need Admin privileges to use the Disk Management Utility (Windows OS).
    In case that the RED LED is blinking at the rate of 3 times per second this indicates that somebody has tried to access the datAshur SSD and the code has been entered 10 times incorrectly (see Brute Force section of the manual.)
    The datAshur SSD drives comes preformatted with NTFS file system for Windows OS. This will allow you to use the datAshur SSD drive on Windows machines.

    For Mac OS X systems you will need to format the drive through the Disk Utility for Mac.

    The SSD in the datAshur SSD is operating at roughly the same temperature as the SSD you might have in your notebook or desktop computer.
    The datAshur SSD case is designed to dissipate the heat generated by the chips and keep them well within their normal operating temperature.
    The firmware inside the datAshur SSD may also reduce the speed of data transfer in order to keep the SSD cool

    It’s a widely known issue for USB 3.0 and wireless devices. Data passing through USB3 cables can create “radio” noise that conflicts with the radio receiver used commonly with wireless mice. This noise is usually in the high 2.4-2.5 GHz range. So if the wireless receiver is placed next to the USB3.0 drive, then the noise created by the USB 3.0 drive will limit the sensitivity of the wireless receiver. (Signal to Noise Ratio).

    This is a relatively easy problem to fix. And plugging the 2 devices into USB port not next to each other should resolved any problems you have.

    It’s worth noting that this issue is ONLY with USB 3.0 devices and wireless mice. Not ALL USB 3.0 devices emit this noise at the same ratio and some wireless mice can be more susceptible to the noise ratio generated by USB£ devices.

    The datAshur Personal flash drive is pre-programmed with a default PIN which will unlock the device for the first time, allowing the user to create their own unique User and Admin PINs.

    Please follow this procedure:

    • Press KEY Button
    • Enter default PIN 11223344
    • Press KEY Button
    • A blinking GREEN LED light will indicate the device is unlocked

    The User PIN (Personal Identification Number) can be changed to almost any number that is desired.

    • The New User PIN must be 7 to 15 digits long.
    • The New User PIN cannot contain only repetitive numbers (3-3-3-3-3-3-3)
    • The New User PIN cannot contain only consecutive numbers (1-2-3-4-5-6-7),(7-6-5-4-3-2-1)

    You can create a word, name, phrase or any other alphanumerical PIN combination by simply pressing the key with the corresponding letters on it.

    Examples of these types of PIN CODES are:

    For Password you would press the following keys:
    7(pqrs) 2(abc) 7(pqrs) 7(pqrs) 9(wxyz) 6(mno) 7(pqrs) 3(def)

    For iStorage you would press:

    Using this method, long and easy to remember PINs can be created.

    Your datAshur Personal has a built-in rechargeable battery.

    Even if the battery is fully discharged you can still continue to use the drive by following the instructions below:

    • Connect the datAshur Personal to a USB port on any computer
    • While connected to the computer, enter the User or Admin PIN to unlock the drive
    • While connected to the USB port, the internal battery will automatically charge – this is shown by a flashing BLUE LED.

    We recommend you keep the datAshur Personal connected for approximately 1 hour to fully charge the battery.

    Unlock the datAshur Personal with the default User PIN (refer to, ‘How do I use the datAshur Personal for the first time?’) and then whilst the GREEN LED is blinking proceed with the following steps:

    • Press and hold the Key Button for 3 seconds
    • Enter a New User PIN number (The PIN must be 7 – 15 digits long)
    • Press the Key Button to store the New User PIN
    • Re-enter the New User PIN number
    • Press the Key Button to confirm the New User PIN

    If you forget the User and Admin PINs, there is absolutely no way of gaining access to the data stored on the drive, there are no back doors to the drive.

    You will need to completely reset the datAshur Personal by following the directions in the User Manual. By resetting the drive, all data stored on the datAshur Personal will be deleted.

    When the datAshur Personal is reset the following occurs:

    • The User and Admin encryption keys are deleted
    • All the data on the datAshur Personal is deleted
    • A new User PIN will need to be set
    • The datAshur Personal will need to be formatted

    The Admin PIN is useful in a corporate environment where an Administrator can provide access to the datAshur Personal if the User PIN is forgotten or unavailable.

    Please follow this procedure:

    • Press the Key Button
    • Enter your User PIN (unlock the datAshur Personal in User mode) and press the Key Button
    • Rapidly press the Key Button twice and hold the Key Button down on the second press for 3 seconds
    • Enter a new Admin PIN and press the Key Button – the GREEN LED will double blink indicating the datAshur Personal is in Admin mode

    Note: If the LEDS in the above step are “single blinking” then the first key press did not register or was not fast enough. If you continue, you will be changing
    the User PIN.

    10 consecutive incorrect PIN entries will activate the brute force mechanism and will completely reset the drive as follows:

    • All encryption keys are deleted
    • The User and Admin PINs are deleted
    • All the data on the datAshur Personal is deleted
    • A new User and/or Admin PIN will need to be set
    • The datAshur Personal will need to be formatted

    In case the User PIN is forgotten, or if you would like to delete all data stored on the drive and configure a New User PIN, the RESET process will clear the User and Admin PIN, the encryption key and will destroy all data. This means a New User PIN will have to be defined in order to re-enable the datAshur Personal.

    Also, since this forces the creation of a new encryption key, the datAshur Personal will have to be reformatted.

    Please follow this procedure:

  • Press and hold the Key Button and the number 2 Button for 3 seconds
  • Press 9 9 9 and press the Key Button
  • Press the Key Button again
  • Note: After resetting the datAshur Personal a solid RED LED appears indicating a New User or Admin PIN has to be set.

    Once the datAshur Personal has been reset either with the method from the previous step or from a brute force attack (10 unsuccessful attempts to unlock) a New User PIN will need to be defined. This state is evident by a solid RED LED.

    This will be due the Mac’s power saving as there is a setting to switch off hard drives that are idle after a fix period of time see below.

    The settings in Energy Saver preferences affect what happens when your Mac is left unattended for a period of time that you specify.

    Disable Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible to prevent the diskAshur going to sleep and not locking. You will also need to stop the computer sleeping to prevent the diskAshur from locking.

    The only way to prevent this is by changing the power settings (Windows computers) of the computer so that it only
    switches of the monitor on hibernation/sleep and keeps power to hard drives and USB. On Apple MAC computers going to

    The iStorage diskAshur Pro comes without any default PIN’s and so needs to have an Admin PIN setup before 1st use as below;

    • Connect the iStorage diskAshur Pro to your computer’s USB port, you will get a solid BLUE and GREEN light
    • Press UNLOCK + 9. The LED will change to solid BLUE and Blinking GREEN.
    • Enter the new Admin PIN and press UNLOCK key. If accepted the GREEN LED will flash for 3 short blinks, then return to solid BLUE and blinking GREEN.
    • Re-enter the Admin PIN and press the UNLOCK key. If accepted the GREEN LED will be solid for 3 seconds. LED will then turn BLUE and remain in Admin mode for 30 seconds or if the LOCK key is pressed and then will return the drive to a standby state.

    • To UNLOCK the drive to use it, exit Admin by pressing the LOCK button. Then enter the new PIN and press UNLOCK

    MLC flash can store several bits of data per cell, but due to this, are not as durable as SLC NAND flash. MLC flash usually has a lifespan of 10,000 cycles.

    SLC stands for Single-Level-Cell. SLC flash only stores 1 bit of data per cell, but this allows the cell to last much longer than MLC flash. SLC flash is usually faster than MLC, but because it does not store as much data, it is more expensive to create a drive of equivalent capacity to an MLC drive. SLC flash usually has a lifespan of 50,000 to 100,000 cycles.
    As is common place amongst the more other brands, iStorage datAshur drives use MLC NAND Flash chips and show very good reliability and will give you good service throughout their lifetime.

    It’s also worth noting that datAshur MTBF is around 750,000 hours based on ideal environmental conditions and barring any physical issues the datAshur should last around 20 years of reasonable use.

    SSD’s are hard drives made out of memory chips which are controlled by a controller. Traditional hard drives use magnetic disks that rotate whilst the heads read and write to and from it, this can take time for the hard drive to spin up and seek to the correct part of the disk, this is also known as seek time. Seek times on SSD’s are incredibly low due to there are no moving parts data is transmitted from memory chips to the controller then to the PC.

    The lifespan of an SSD is determined by the number of cycles per block of memory and how much you use it. Reading from an SSD does not use up cycles, but writing does. All MLC drives should last at least 5 years of constant OS usage, with SLC drives lasting much longer. However, other factors, such as wear levelling and write amplification can have an impact on lifespan, and it is possible for a high quality MLC drive to last longer than a low quality SLC SSD.

    For example, Intel’s X25-M SSD’s are MLC, and they are rated to last for 100GB of writes every day, for 5 years. No home user would write 100GB to an SSD every day, so an Intel SSD is likely to last 10-15+ years, by which time, technology will have advanced anyway.

    A bonus with SSD’s, is that when they do fail, you will still be able to read from them, so you can still recover data, unlike a traditional HDD. (However circumstances can vary for this situation to occur.)

    SSD’s are incredibly durable, because they contain no moving parts, unlike an HDD. Also, because SSD’s do not store data using magnetism, they are less likely to be affected by magnets, meaning the only way to break an SSD is to physically break it. SSD’s are rated at up to 1500G shock before damage, which means they are also very secure from drops, which would make them ideal for portable drives, when costs come down.

    It is thought that SSD’s use less power than HDD’s, and this is true, for the most part, as an SSD in use will draw less power than an HDD in use. However, at idle, it is possible for an HDD to be more efficient than an SSD, because the HDD shuts down completely.

    This means an SSD is not guaranteed to draw less power overall, or increase laptop battery life.

    The benefits of using an SSD over a conventional HDD are huge; they offer higher read and write speeds, smaller form factor than desktop HDD’s, much faster access times, and the lack of heat and noise production.

    Read and writes are higher than an HDD simply due to the fact they use flash NAND memory. An HDD is limited by the speed it can spin at, and the faster they spin, the more noise and heat is produced. SSD’s usually offer between up to 512MB/s read (limited by SATA 2), and 70MB/s to 512MB/s writes (limited by SATA 2), giving them great performance when opening large programs.

    Currently, most consumer SSD’s come in the 2.5″ form factor, making them smaller than 3.5″ HDD, allowing several drives to fit in the same slot. OCZ Colossus is a 3.5″ SSD which uses a raid controller within the 3.5″ case to make the SSD around twice as fast for sustained reads and writes.

    Access times are virtually nothing, <0.2ms. Compared to a Raptor's 7.4ms or a regular 3.5" 7200rpm HDD's 12ms+, this is exceptional, and makes them brilliant for an operating system. SSD's produce absolutely no noise, which is a clear advantage over HDD's, and a godsend in "silent" PC's. They also produce little to no heat, which means they can operate in PC cases without any airflow. These are ideal for games, levels and maps will load incredibly quickly compared to standard hard drives.

    The life time of our datAshur SSD is a complex formula which works on the principle stated above. That being said, for a 120GB key, if you wrote 10 GB of data to the drive per day, at a Write Amplification of 3x, you could expect the drive to reach its maximum endurance in about 35 years. (The larger the files, the less amplification, the longer to reach maximum endurance.)

    So the drive will be expected to outlast the battery, which has a life expectancy of about 15 years.

    Should you forget your PIN for any of our drives. Please contact your IT administrator or service desk if you were issued the device in a company environment.They may be able to assist with admin PINS if created. If this is a personal device, it may have to be reset. iStorage DO NOT have any backdoor pins to help retrieve lost data.

    The datAshur SSD drive is a compatible drive to work with Windows to GO (although not certified by Microsoft). It will work perfectly. In order to use Windows to Go you will need a fully licenced version of Windows 8.1 Enterprise or Windows 10 Enterprise.

    iStorage products can be whitelisting on corporate network’s by using the VID/PID of the iStorage drive required.

    Device Instance – All iStorage products have a unique device instance. This is shown as a 16 character number after the PID\VID information and is completely unique to each iStorage product. This means if there is Device Control setup on a network or host and an iStorage device needs adding to a `Allowed` device list (or `Whitelist`, `Good list`) then each individual iStorage product can be added and yet if an unknown iStorage product is used i.e. not a corporately issued iStorage product this will be blocked just like any other unauthorised device. See the examples of device instances below you will see 2 iStorage datAshur’s that are attached to this computer and their unique ID appears under `USB Mass Storage Device` and they are both different.
